GENERAL INFORMATION

Although the Port Management Office is named after Nasipit where the site of the Fourth
IBRD Ports Project is located, the center of trade and industry is situated at the provincial capital of Butuan City.

Butuan City is the central part of the province of Agusan del Norte and occupies 20% of its total land area.  It is the capital of the newly created Caraga, Region 13 which comprises the provinces of Agusan del Norte and Sur, the two Surigao provinces and the cities of Surigao
and Butuan.

Port Limits

Its boundaries start at the Nasipit government

wharf up to longitude 125o  25' 00" East of
Buenavista then going westward including
the municipality of Carmen.

Entrance Channel At the western side of the entrance is a natural
coral reef formation making it dangerous and
narrow.   The channel has a 150m. clearance
entrance to negotiate and around 500m. going
to the government wharf.  Average draft at the entrance is 25m.
Turning Basin The turning basin has a radius of around 200 m.
with a minimum navigable depth of 10.0m from MLLW.
Harbor Entrance Harbor entrance into the port requires compulsary services of baseport pilots and tug assistance.
Land Access 25 kms. from Butuan City with good road network effectively linking both the Southern and Northern Mindanao provinces.
Climatological Condition

There is no definite dry or rainy season.  Rainfall is pronounced throughout the year, markedly occurring from the months of November to January.  The annual average rainfall is 91.5 inches. 

Practically, the port of Nasipit is “typhoon-free” being outside the natural typhoon belt.
Oceanography Deep water at the port of Nasipit extends well into the harbor but the inner end is filled with mud flats, fish ponds and swamps which extend toward the eastern side of the harbor.  
Generally, the sub-surface which sloped down to 10-meter contour are quite steep.  The harbor is protected by an outer coral reef stretching across the entrance from the western headland and an inner sand pit stretching across the eastern direction from which waves will approach and enter the harbor in the northeast.
Seismic Condition A seismic coefficient of 1.4 is considered as appropriate for structures
Topography

Generally, the province is made up of flat rolling lands,
surrounded by mountains and crisscrossed by rivers.

The harbor at the port of Nasipit is approximately two kms. Long and less than a kilometer wide facing north into Butuan Bay.  Ground around the harbor rises to about 20 m. elevation, on some place quite steep from the water edge and beyond the coastal highway, the land rises rapidly towards the interior of Mindanao
to the South.

Soil Condition Soil condition at Nasipit is made up of variable layers of alluvial deposits and coralline straits.  Good foundation materials exist at its western and northern side and becomes softer at the southern side.
Navigation
 Approach
Nasipit is a natural cove.  Two nautical miles
northeast of Nasipit Lumber Company is the anchorage area where the pilot boarding station is located.
PORT FACILITIES
Description Reinforced concrete general purpose wharf
utlized for foreign and domestic general cargoes
and passengers.

Berth Facilities A 184.25 meter long container berth with a load capacity of 68.67 MPa and an apron width of 20 meters.   Ro-ro berth with a berth length of 75
meters and three (3) units 20 x 20 meter square
Ro-ro ramp having a load capacity of 51.71 MPa protected by rubber fenders and provided with
mooring facilities.
Anchorage For small vessels, a depth of 10m is positioned at
 475 yards SE of light structure.  Anchorage has limited swing room for large vessels.  For large vessels' holding ground anchor is 47m sand, mud
0.5 mile offshore eastward of harbor entrance.
Storage Facilities 9,600 sq.m. open storage area:  cargo shed of
1,200 sq.m.

Pilotage PIlotage is compulsary.  It is handled by four (4)
pilots of Masao Harbor Pilots Association.

ETA:  Ocean-going vessls-24 hrs. noticeCoastal vessels-12 hrs. notice.
Location of anchorage for vessels awaiting a pilot is at quarantine anchorage area 9o 00' 30" N and 125o 28' 15"E.
